Seeds of Learning Society

“One generation plants the trees, another gets the shade.”

The namesake at The Children’s Museum of La Crosse, Gertrude Salzer Gordon, shared the wisdom that “one generation plants the trees, and another enjoys the shade”, passed down from her grandfather, John Salzer, who founded the Salzer Seed Company in La Crosse.

From the beginning of The Museum’s journey, Gert’s spirit, nurturing heart, and generosity helped set our roots. She imagined a warm, inviting place where children and families could learn, play, and connect.

Gert’s gift, and the spirit behind it, comes from a shared belief that it’s important to leave the world better for those who come after us. She planted the Seeds of Learning Society and made it possible for you to also make a difference and leave your legacy.

Plant your seeds, leave your legacy, and know the young and young at heart will forever have a place to grow!

Celebrate Play. The Museum’s mission is to provide a fun, hands-on space for the young and young-at-heart to learn, connect, and grow through play - all while making memories to share over generations.

Make Memories. Over 70,000 guests make lifetime connections and memories at The Museum each year exploring over 3 floors and 40+ exhibits. The Museum is non-profit and receives no government funding. It’s maintained and made possible by your support!

Leave a legacy. Following Gert’s generosity and spirit, a gift in your will or estate plan helps sustain our mission and museum for many generations to come. There are lots of meaningful ways to make a difference—like donating appreciated stocks or giving through a donor-advised fund. We're here to help you explore your options.

And if you’ve already included us in your plans, we’d love to know! It would be an honor to recognize you as part of our Seeds of Learning Giving Society.

Plant your seeds today!
